The Conversationalists by James and Jerome

Created, written, and composed by Jerome Ellis and James Harrison Monaco
Developed with and directed by Annie Tippe

The Bushwick Starr is thrilled to present the world premiere of The Conversationalists, created by the popular downtown musician-storyteller duo James & Jerome, and developed with and directed by Annie Tippe.

In their most recent experiment with live storytelling and music, as well as their first time working with an ensemble of musicians and performers, James & Jerome create an original movie that plays only inside the audience's minds. This live "movie" is an international melodrama about the triangular friendship (and sometimes enemyship) between a Colombian-born Mexican-raised pop-ranchera star, her teenage son, and a Palestinian-born Jordanian-raised owner of a chess shop in Greenwich Village. The Conversationalists is experienced at once as a theater piece, a concert, a radio play, a night of storytelling, and a movie dreamed together.
Music directed by Jerome Ellis
Additional Music and Orchestrations by: John Murchison, Michelle J. Rodriguez, and Delaney Stockli

Featuring Jerome Ellis, James Harrison Monaco, John Murchison, Michelle J. Rodriguez, and Delaney Stockli

Set Design by Diggle, Lighting Design by Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew, Sound Design by Lawrence Schober, Video Design by Caroline M. MICHA's début at the Green Mill

MICHA MAKES her début at the historic Green Mill Jazz Club in Chicago at Paper Machete, A “Live Magazine” hosted by Christopher Piatt. No cover.

More about the Green Mill:

The Green Mill is sophisticated informality, warm glowing atmosphere steeped in the heady sounds of the early ’30s and ’40s; it was actually patterned after Clark Monroe’s Uptown House in Harlem (as it was during the ’40s). Uniquely comfortable to all audiences from the sequined Saturday night date to the progressively dressed offbeat student, the magic of the Mill is that the audience commingles in its mutual respect for the music.

And, in the far corner, in all her alabaster glory, stands Ceres, Goddess of Harvest, rechristened Stella by Starlight by the house musicians. Stella was salvaged from the lower depths of the Green Mill, dusted off, and returned to complement the authenticity of the art deco/art nouveau décor in the light fixtures and artwork, embellished with lavishly scrolled frames. Shades of Al Capone’s heyday are found in the wall memorabilia as you enter and in the famous booth where he and his henchmen could keep a cautious eye on both doors.

Today, the Green Mill, in keeping with owner Dave Jemilo’s philosophy for a proper mix of down-to-earth friendliness and class, maintains an authenticity of the ‘40s in service, price and music, perfected upon with the steady Sunday night performance of the internationally acclaimed Uptown Poetry Slam which Marc Smith began at the Mill in 1986.

Tiny Desk Contest On The Road: Chicago Showcase with WBEZ at Lagunitas TapRoom

Join WBEZ, NPR Music and Lagunitas Brewing Company for a celebration of the Tiny Desk Contest community in Chicago! This event will feature a live performance by 2018 Tiny Desk Contest winner Naia Izumi, as well as some of our favorite local artists who entered the Contest this year:

Thousands of unsigned bands and artists entered NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest in 2018, our search to find a great undiscovered talent to perform at the most famous desk in music. Our judges picked one winner, but in the process, we found many new musicians to fall in love with, and countless reasons to celebrate all the creativity tucked away in communities across the country.

Now, NPR Music and Lagunitas Brewing Company, the sponsor of the Tiny Desk Contest since its launch in 2014, are teaming up with our friends at WBEZ to bring Naia Izumi and the Tiny Desk Contest tour to Chicago.

Winter Slumber to Benefit PRIMA & Puerto Rico No Se Vende Al Scorch & Friends

It's back! The second installment of our annual Winter Slumber featuring Chicago singer-songwriter, guitarist and banjoist AL SCORCH returns to the Empty Bottle Brunch Hour. A special residency that started here in early 2013, this Sunday afternoon series finds Scorch and a variety of guests stretching their musical legs and 2018 will see a charitable element brought to each month's installment.

In February we will be accepting donations for two organizations: PRIMA (Puerto Rico Independent Musicians & Artists) and Puerto Rico No Se Vende.

Raquel Berríos and Luis Del Valle, members of the indie band BUSCABULLA, and Latina musician ANI CORDERO have started the Puerto Rico Independent Musicians Fund (PRIMA), an emergency grant to help struggling artists in Puerto Rico after the category 4 storm ravaged the U.S territory in September.

With great music, jolly people and a damn good cause, Winter Slumbers are always a fantastic way to spend some of those escape the tundra Sunday afternoons. So grab a pal or four, order a round of bloodies, maybe some brunch, and enjoy the 2018 Winter Slumber.

East o', West o'! A $7 Gala

Join me for a $7 Gala benefitting and celebrating Chicago-based singer, songwriter and musical theatre composer Michelle J. Rodriguez and her musical called East o', West o'! This musical is being presented in New York this summer in a festival at an incredible off-Broadway theatre (expect an announcement soon)! It's an amazing opportunity, and your $7 will go directly to paying actors, musicians and the creative team who will be bringing East o', West o'! to life in its one-night presentation on June 24th in NYC!

Travel through the gorgeous spaces of the Den Theatre and listen to exclusive sneak-peek performances of songs from the show by Ms. Rodriguez herself! We'll take you on a journey through our spaces and a journey through the story in this special gala event!

Description of the show:
East o’, West o’! is a musical and a concert about celebrating the in-between spaces we encounter in our lives. The story is based on a Norwegian folktale, “East o’ the Sun and West o’ the Moon," and is woven through a sweeping folk score that touches on the roots of American music: work songs, Appalachian harmonies, bluegrass, and contemporary American singer/songwriter folk. At the center of the story is Ava, our big-hearted heroine who is continually caught in between her many identities, as she explores who she is and who she wants to become. Centered around love, belonging, adventure, and home, East o’, West o’! draws on communal folk storytelling traditions to invite its audience to share in the joy of becoming, to stomp their feet, and to ride along with Ava as she embarks on the journey of a lifetime.

Michelle J. Rodriguez is a singer, songwriter and musical theatre composer based in Chicago. She can be seen performing solo or with her band, MICHA, at music and performance venues like Steppenwolf, Salonathon, The Hideout Inn and Collaboraction. Acting credits include La Havana Madrid (u/s, Teatro Vista/Steppenwolf), Marta in Company (Williamstheatre) and Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris (Williamstheatre). Musical theatre writing credits include Betty White: The Musical! (Immediate Theatre), Jeeraan (Neighbors) (in development), East o', West o'! and Bibliophile (in development).
